Kevin,
John Norwood's books talks about car loads of Pigs, I think from Farmington to Alamosa.
The stories talk about having to be extra careful at water stops during the night as locals could pull the side door away from the car enough to fit a youngster into the car to get a couple of pigs out.
After a couple of trips where they ended up with fewer pigs than they started with, they realized what was going on.
Nice family vaules, "Let's hoist Little Johnny into the car, he is small enough to steal some pigs". But they way he tells the story, it is pretty funny.
