Maysville to Monarch was 9 miles with a ruling 4.5% grade, two switchbacks and a "double lariat" loop. The loaded limestone cars came down the hill which, combined with the switchbacks, made for some interesting double headed movements. There is good footage of action on the Monarch branch shot by Jack Alexander and Vince Ryan in the 1950s. It is available as "The Rio Grande Southern. The Denver and Rio Grande Western." from Green Frog productions.
