I'm sorry, but I cannot agree that MOST traction engine owners have enough respect for their machines to spend money on fixing their boilers. I have been scared by the attitude of traction engine owners. I would say there is a wide gulf between tourist railroad operators and the average steam tractor owner and runner. I have been in contact with traction engine owners here in Michigan who have the attitude that if they can't run at 150 psi it's not worth running, and do not want the state to require ultrasonic thickness testing. They don't even consider replacing side sheets if they're thin. Yes, there are good, reasonable and responsible traction engine owners out there, But there are quite a few who shouldn't be allowed to play with matches.
