There are several fantastic publications.
Narrow gauge in the Arras sector is a well researched book. Tracks to the trenches has many striking photographs. Narrow gauge and shortline Gazette had a few articles on domestic logging operations. Oahu's Narrow Gauge Army Rail covered the scholfield barracks railway on oahu. Light railways of the first World war is a history of the British trench rail.
There are a few others, but that should get you started.
In regards to the three domestic locomotives. The engine at Fort Benning is well cared for. And the two former Byron engines have a very bright future.
