Thinking back to the days long ago (1959 to 1973) when I was in the operating department, getting the trains over the road was almost a religious mission. If there was a line blockage the gut reaction was to just do it, even at the risk of life and limb. You read Norwood's accounts now and they seem super human. But that was the norm in those days, there are many SP veterans who can tell similar stories with regard to Donner. In later years I worked with a retired GN guy with some really wild stories of railroading in blizzards. They just did it. Today some risk manager would strongly advise against it.
