The pit was inside the roundhouse. A drawing of the pit was printed in the NMRA Rocky Mountain Region Helper newsletter showing it inside. The pit was originally made to serve K-27s. The roundhouse stalls were not long enough to fit K-36s and K-37s so the engines were partially outside. When helpers were not based at Sargents they would run out from Gunnison ahead of the freight trains.
The traffic over Marshall Pass was seasonal. Coal and stock shipments were heavy at different times of the year.
