The Rotary is set up to run the air brakes on the train, just like a locomotive. Jerry's pics show a G-6 brake valve in the pilot house along with an SWA straight air valve for the Rotary's own brakes.
When I was there, a couple of important parts were missing from the brake valve, so we never used the OY to control the automatic air.

I've never said the firedoor was missing parts. The first time I worked the Rotary in 1983, the air door didn't work, and the second fireman was in charge of opening and closing the fire door. On subsequent trip in the 1990's the air door worked.

No flanger eh? I thought they rebuilt the cylinder and got it working. Pretty important device, the flanger.
