Dan,
There have been prior discussions on this board regarding a San Juan "reunion".
The three main places to find the Surviving San Juan Equipment is
C&TS
D&S
Knott's Berry Farm in California
As it stands now, the C&TS and the D&S have the correct surviving equipment to recreate a San Juan Consist.
The C&TS have the Head-end Cars (RPO 54 and Baggage Car 163). The RPO was recently restored. The Baggage Car is waiting its turn for restoration.
The D&S have four (4) Closed Vestibule Coaches and Parlor Car Alamosa. All those cars are rail-worthy to my knowledge.
In the new spirit of cooperation between the C&TS and the D&S, it would not be out of the realm of possibility. In fact both railroads could conceivably take advantage of each others equipment. For example, the RPO 54 and Baggage Car be sent to Durango for several weeks to recreate San Juan's. After the D&S has had a turn, the equipment could be sent to Chama for a few weeks of San Juan recreations.
The logistics are simple, but the shipping costs may be the limiting factor. How much to truck a passenger car 103 miles, loading and unloading? I don't know
I do know I would buy a ticket on a San Juan Recreation, in fact I would buy multiple tickets and ride that San Juan a bunch.
