An environmental assessment is part of the project, but the real problem in the past with this site was low level radioactivity, not lead. The rocks around here tend to have hot spots--the spur (Minco) below Elk Park was put in a few years ago for a group of uranium claims in that area when they were doing development work, and it occurs naturally with many of the local ore bodies.
The Sawpit tram stucture on the RGS that we rebuilt 2 years ago has the same problem--that was all uranium and radium that was mined there, but the BLM said we could work the site without problem, but we kept it to a minimum anyway. Little things that could really bother you if you knew what was cluttering up your favorite abandoned railroad site. Just think of all that ore that went out on narrow gauge cars, some of them now converted to passenger use--best not to dwell on such thoughts.
