2 years after my earlier post, Knotts hasn't changed much, and it is still fairly uncluttered, but this time 340 (as 40) is pulling the train. (posing with my aunt visiting from Germany and my brother JR).
Just as a perspective on changing times, in 1961 my aunt Ingrid flew from Amsterdam to New York city, then traveled by train to Chicago, and connected to the Rock Island/Southern Pacific GOLDEN STATE to Alamogordo, New Mexico, later returning by the same route. Back then that was simply the accepted mode of long distance travel.
A postcard from the 1961 era with engine 40 and kids riding burros. I don't think they are doing that these days.
Off to Chicago and New York. Who could have guessed in 1961 that the imposing GOLDEN STATE would be gone in a few years, but that 41, 340, the DSNG and C&TS would be going strong in 2020? (brothers Wolf and JR saying good bye at the Alamogordo station)
