Matthew's commentary and pix reminded me of how I got sucked in. I had no interest in chasing the 4014, it was going to be a shiny show piece not a REAL working steam engine. I ignored it. Then it headed west from Cheyenne last May and pictures like this showed up on the internet.
Sunrise at Granger
Wow. And all of a sudden I found a really cheap air fare to Salt Lake. The hook was set. But the chase east from Ogden was more a family event than a railfan chase. But still I enjoyed myself and got a few pix like this:
A lot of friendly waves
So this October I took a second bite of the apple, and was glad I did. Tuesday, October 1 dawned clear and quite cold at Evanston, Wyoming. I meandered down to a grade crossing close to my motel, and waited. I hoped that being close to town he would be accelerating and putting out at least a small amount of clagg. A long westbound doublestack crept by.. And behind it 4014 slowly followed its block. As it came into view an enormous plume of condensing steam collected above it. Talk about being a happy camper.
So even a shiny show piece can put on an exciting show. Matthew's series does a great job of telling the story.
