Michael touched on the 3 day idea. Personally I do not see them going beyond Cresco the first day anyway. I could be wrong of course, but hopefully they will have snow between Chama and Lobato which would allow for some nice morning shots between Chama and the bridge. If they do the second highway crossing to Cresco in the afternoon that would be nice lighting. Cresco would be a nice destination for water. The second day could be Cresco to Cumbres. The problem here is there are not many places to photograph from Cresco to Coxo crossing. However, if they do go to Cumbres, the Windy point stuff is spectacular, even from the road. Day 3 could be Cumbres to Los Pinos Telephone Booth or thereabouts. Could start by clearing the wye at Cumbres and continue east. Buses would still work for that section to Los Pinos.
As for Kevin with the risk factor, I think you could say there is risk in anything you do where steam is concerned. In 1991 I made a big Western swing. It started with 3985 and 844 double heading to Salt Lake City. Then we headed for LA to shoot 3751 to Sacramento, but alas it didn't happen. But I lucked out and found out in California that OY was going to be clearing the line. So we killed some time shooting diesels and made our way to Chama. We got really lucky, and I would later see 3751 from Los Angeles 2300 miles to Chicago. So I have had my share of failures over the years. Best is to go for the ones that are low risk, or high reward! The OY falls into the High Reward category.
Here is a preview of our 1991 Rotary show, that might get you guys interested!!! At the 38-40 second mark you can see Earl Knoob hanging out of the rotary. He was the pilot. One of my favorite scenes is the MOW crew shoveling out the switches at Cumbres with the OY doing the west leg of the wye.
