The week starting Monday, October 14 was one of the more amazing weeks on C&TS. The railroad had six engines under steam that week : 168, 315, 463, 484, 488, and 489 ! On Monday morning three trains left Antonito: the engineer/fireman school train with 488, the regular passenger with 463, and 168 with a short train for Lava. Sunday afternoon after watching some of the Goose action in Ridgway I made it as far as Pagosa Springs, not wishing to bash into a deer at dusk. Monday morning I headed straight to Gravity Hill and hiked in to favorite spot with long distance views. The engineer/fireman train was already passing Lava tank, but I was in time for the 463 and 168 trains.
Here is 463 and her 10-car train a few miles out of Antonito. After a few more days of Indian Summer the peaks in the background would get a fresh cover of white.
