Always nice to see South Africa. This was the Durango-Silverton line of South Africa. It lasted until 2006-2007, when slides closed the line, and they decided not to repair it. A real shame. Was there in 1977 and 1984. In 1984 we rode the train in the one combination car. Was two classes I believe. Anyway a great ride and a couple of good grades each way. Spend 4-5 days on the line doing photos. Have similar color of the Kaimanns River Bridge also. Great location. John West was there as well after I was I believe.
Also the final shot is a location called Swartzvlei I believe. One could get nice backlit shots there in the morning, or get over to the sunny side for 3/4 views. Did both in 1984. Also we once chased a special empty coach train from George to Knysna with 2 engines. They returned with freight, and one was a pusher(Banker). Had never seen that on the line. That was a Saturday, and on Sunday a special doubleheader excursion ran from Kynsna to George which we chased as well. We were in South Africa 30 days, and had sun everyday except for 1 along this line. Of course being near the ocean accounts for that.
Thanks for the SA pics and look forward to more. What a fantastic place it was.
