Completing the 8 x 8 brake cylinder/reservoir unit . . .
To make the diameter uniform end to end, the welded up reservoir is turned down slightly, to more closely match the original's size. This also makes the welds invisible. Dan Bangma and his son Tyler worked on the many steps to get the assembly finished for us.
A few pieces are welded onto either the cylinder or reservoir to complete the unit and provide mounting points. Here is the cylinder with a two-piece bracket on the side that will be the anchor point for the outer fulcrum lever. Richard machined up these and the reservoir mounting plate.
Here is the whole, finished unit assembled with triple valve. It's ready for installation of the piston and spring (which we have). There is also a drain plug on the bottom of the reservoir for water drainage through a spring-closed drain valve (which we also have!).
It was painting day last December, on the stands are the cylinder, and reservoir. If you look close on the ground there are a couple pedestals as well. The visible large hardware on the frame below the body are gloss black, two-part Tek industrial paint, recommended by Stathi Pappas. The entire rest of the body will be the historical "CB&Q" caboose red that was on the car in the '20s and later.
