The various "West Coast" specials of Lima Shays, Climax and Heisler came after Willamette began constructing its geared locomotives for the western logging market. These were an improved version of the Shay locomotive after the original patents had expired. Willamette had experience overhauling and repairing shays for the Oregon and Washington loggers and experience in building other equipment for the logging industry.
