All the photos I have seen of C-48, K-36, K-37, and 44 ton and S-2 with the air adjustable coupler on the front have a plain triple coupler casting on the rear. I think they tended to do most work ahead of the engine so the engineer had a clear view of the brakemen.
Note that the engineer is over the common rail, so that a NG or SG car sides are at about the same width and easy to see crew hanging off the cars.I have no proof, it just looks like a good idea for safe operation.
I think Mr. Jerry Day has posted the AFE for this equipment in the past, and there is only 1 per engine.
