A few weeks ago I was in Roseville, California when the UP sent out two rotaries, one on each end of a set of two diesel units so that whichever direction they were going, up or down, they had a rotary in front in the direction of travel. In deep snow the grade has little impact, since the rotary chute has to be pushed with considerable force into the snow pack, hence multiple engines pushing the plow to where the rotary wheel can attack the snow.
