I owned an "Instamatic" when I was a kid and I shot a lot of film with it. The problem with those cameras.....at least with mine (a 104 model).....is that the shutter speed, aperture and focus were all fixed and probably optimized for exposure vs. sharpness. I've read that the shutter speed was like 1/90th of a second, which in my hands, would likely produce a soft image even on a slow train. So, with virtually no control over the camera settings, it is no huge surprise that you were not able to achieve the sharpness or excellent DOF that we see in the second photo.
It is amazing to me how the technologies available to the common folk have improved during my life. I still credit the space program with for many of these amazing leaps, despite the fact that the high-water mark of that program (from my perspective), occurred back in 1972. LOL!
