I had my first introduction to European steam in Germany and England in 1959. I was only 11 at the time, so I didn't take note of such things as wheel arrangement, builder, etc. To me, they were steam engines, they made all the right noises, and the fact that they looked a little different or were painted differently than US steam didn't matter. They were steam!
