You are correct. Last mainline SG steam for the most part was 1960-61 in the U.S., and 1968 for the NG freight on the D&RGW. As youngsters my brother and I were exposed to a lot of steam through dad, but when we were able to get decent cameras it was too late for anything other than excursions. But then we learned there was a lot of regular service steam in places like South America, Europe, Africa and other countries. I am thankful I got to experience regular service steam on a daily basis in places like Europe. When we thought of overseas trips we were taking versus the excursions back in the U.S. we felt good about making those trips, even if on a shoestring as college students. Europe was also cool as there was a lot of character and infrastructure that was gone in the U.S. At first I was reluctant to go as the engines were not as appealing as US engines. However after I first some some in operation I was changing my mind. Nothing like the real thing.
