I have no practical experience to go on, but I would think that standard gauge (4' 8.5") equipment would run fairly well on 4' 9" gauge, with a bit of a higher risk of derailing. I would think that 4' 9" equipment would be more problematic running on standard gauge as it would be too tight of a fit, and would put excess pressure on both the rails and on the wheel sets, making for a much higher risk of derailing or rolling a rail.
