I was in Durango for a week visiting a friend during the shut down of the railroad. Let me tell you business WAS suffering in Durango. If the shutdown had lasted all summer it would have meant curtains for several businesses there, also Silverton. They lost about 50% of their normal summer income. The economic benefit of the railroad to the Durango/Silverton area is monumental.
The complainers are the rich cats that have taken over in the Durango area. (Try to buy property up there, it's gone sky high) The old time residents know the value of the D&S and and the Rio Grande before that. Not much pro D&S was included in their newspaper. Letters to the editor were overwhelmingly against the D&S and its "filthy" coal exhaust. That just about tells you all you need to know.
