Matthew's images are a great example of B&W photography. When I look back at the pix I took over the past 50 years, the old B&W tend to be my favorites. Now that I shoot digital exclusively, I have resisted converting the color to B&W. But more and more I am starting to do so. As Matthew's images show so well, B&W is a wonderful art form. It has a visual impact that is just very different than color, not better or worse, just very different. While color can be used "artfully", I think B&W tends to encourage perhaps even force more creativity.
