Hard cuts are not always a bad thing. I just like blending, especially in the stuff you guys did here where you are showing different angles of the same thing. A slow dissolve might be even more dramatic in some cases. I know some of my older competitors NEVER do anything but cuts. Now in the old days of film shooting we run across terrible cut edits, where the film camera is turned off, then back on a little further down the track, which makes "Jump Cuts". Those are really bad, and in old films I try to use Fade in and Outs to break-up those jumps when possible. Generally there is so little extra video to work with(on the original films), that dissolves don't even work in operation as they use up 15 frames on each clip (a whole second). This may not seem like much but on a 4 second cut it is a lot. I tend to enjoy the longer cuts too, but will sometimes break them down into chunks, like a distance view, then the main runby, and maybe if I don't pan, show a dissolve to the going away shot. I tend to pan as much as I can, since that is the way most of us will view the passing of a train. If its steam I want to see as much of that action as I can!!!
All personal preferences, and if everyone did the same thing then there would be no individualism or creativity. I should buy a squadron of drones, since I am getting too old to hike around to all the good spots!!!
Cheers,
Greg
