Perhaps you are not aware that functionality (more or less) already exists.

The 'red flag' to the left of "some" threads in the "Message Display" (thread listing) indicates which threads have "new / unread" messages. And if you set your
"Control Panel" option of "Message reading display options:"
to be "Multiple messages per page, threaded" then clicking the red flag will take you directly to the 'first' unread message in that thread.

Of course, all of this requires that one must read NGDF "always" logged-in so that the system can track what you have read/not read.
