A year or two ago, the local newspaper ran a feature article of a guy that built a steam engine automobile that runs on waste restaurant cooking oil. According to the article he was driving cross country to show it off, and refueling at fast food places which are in abundance. According to this creator of this automobile, the main benefit of his work was to make restaurant cooking oil an alternate fuel for automobiles thereby making french fry oil live a second life. Now imaging engine 493 taking a train to Silverton running on waste restaurant cooking oil. Imagine the added dimension to the sense of smell as the engine crosses the highway at Hermosa. No more coal scent, but one replaced with a subliminal urge to go to a fast food restaurant and order fish or chicken. Burned french fry oil might add a new dimension to railfanning we don't have right now. Who knows, watching a former coal fired steam engine cross in front of you might make you hungry and earn brownie points with those people that want coal to disappear. What BTU output can be expected from waste restaurant oil compared to burning waste motor oil?
