On the morning of July 21, we boarded the bus in Chama and whisked in non-air conditioned comfort (?) to the terminal in Antonito for the train ride back to Chama. Before we arrived, 484 had been brought off the trail of the wye and placed on the front of the train. Here fireman Coker is preparing to oil around 484 before departure.
I like the guy climbing out of the gangway, about to do a face plant by not climbing down facing the equipment....
The was the first time I had ever ridden westbound. I got lots of nice recordings of 484 working her 21 car train west. Great ride.
Crossing the ill-fated bridge at MP 287.5
At MP 301, just west of Big Horn the train stopped for a photorun. Everyone got off and lined up behind the row of white rocks. Rich backed 484 up around the corner and came shuffling ahead, mugging for the camera.
By the time reached Sublette, the clouds were rolling in. by the time we passed Mud Tunnel the rain started and it got REAL dark. The pics I took at Phantom Curve are basicly BLACK. Osier was a soggy mess. Everyone grabbed their food and went back to the train to eat with their trays on their laps. Pretty yucky experience. After eating the rain relented enough for the adventurous to wander around a bit.
The big lesson I learned that day was that long telephoto lenses, dark rainy days and bumpy train rides made for blurry pictures.
Continuing west after lunch, we rounded the curve at Los Pinos.
