I am surely no expert on the subject. but can relate one experience I had with oil burners. I was riding in the cab of one well known oil-burner, at speeds between 55-70 mph. The engine was making a weird thumping noise and the crew could not figure out what the issue was. The engineer and fireman looked at each other awhile. Then they put sand in the flues thinking that might help. Finally they made a stop to check it out. I was told the oil heater was making the oil so hot it was evaporating in the firebox, and it caused this noise. I have it on video but they asked me not to use it, so I respectfully did not. I don't know which was worse that episode or the air coming undone behind the water car!!!! IT was an eventful 3 hour cab ride!
