Bunker C oil had to be heated to flow. Fueling facilities had large storage tanks that were heated. Today versions of oil used are not thick like bunker C. But, there are tank heaters for the oil bunker in tenders and on many engines heaters below the firebox on the left side that are heated with steam from the engine.
