8, but as to why the numbers were swapped I have no idea. "U.P. #478" ran light from Chama to Alamosa on October 10, IIRC, and was the last locomotive to be shopped in Alamosa. On December 5, 1968, D&RGW #473, with #483 as her helper, pulled #481 dead-in-train and several carloads of parts – along with the Silverton Train equipment used for the Natl. Park Service Special in November and two cabeese – from Alamosa to Chama. The following day #473 continued on to Durango with this 'Hospital Train', while #483 and one caboose returned to Alamosa — the very last D&RGW operation over Cumbres Pass.
