1954 was the first year my father went to the D&RGW as well. But he liked a lot of
different railroads all over the U.S. and enjoyed and photographed as much as possible.
I fully understand why you moved to Durango. That is not the question. The poster said he thought one of
the main reasons the railroads survive today is because they are Narrow Gauge, and I am offering other scenarios.

Too bad you are not interested in more than one railroad. I guess my question to you still is would it have
mattered if the 470's, 480's, and 490's (And the others before them) were running on the two railroads today if they were not narrow gauge.
In many circles (Not mine per se), narrow gauge is looked down upon for obvious reasons. I have had customers who say they would never buy
a video on the Narrow Gauge. Of course I am fortunate that others don't feel that way. Each to their own I guess.
Back on topic, I think the tourists would have still been there to ride to Silverton, even if it was standard gauge.
