I disagree. I think the main reason is that it is steam, and one of the last steam-hauled lines in the country. Being a part of a larger standard gauge Railroad and the longevity had as much to do with it as anything. Also the great scenery and charm of the remote areas. I think Durango to Silverton would have been a tourist train even if it wee Narrow Gauge. The NG does distinguish it from the norm however I suppose. For me and other steam fans it would be just as good or maybe even better were it Standard Gauge. Just my thoughts. Spitting hairs here, as its all good now!
