Greg,
When I go down to Cresco Tank, that is the way I always go. Yes, the trail can be slippery, but I am typically more concerned about barbed wire lying on the ground and the potential to really get hurt. Up until the last year or two, I used to scramble back up that trail to try and get a Cumbres shot, kicking the butts of guys 30 years younger than me in a race to the cars. My days of doing that may be numbered, but as a flat-lander, I keep up the exercise routine, because I don't want to be bothered by the altitude. So far, going back up that Cresco trail is the only time I am typically bothered when I am out there. When I get back to the car, my heart is probably at 120% of rated power.
WRT hiking to get shots vs. doing charters, the hiking route would be far more appealing to me if I lived there like Jerry does. But when I have just a few days to shoot around, doing a charter is far more efficient.
