Better late than never, here are some of my photos from the recent WW&F Spring Work Weekend.
On Friday afternoon I joined Joe and the track crew working on the Davis Grade south of Sutter's Crossing.
Here is Dana trimming the last rail to fit. The rail saw is one of the WW&F's few concessions to modernity.
On Saturday and Sunday I helped with the machine shop move from Bay 4 to the shop extension at the south ends of Bays 1-3, in preparation for Bay 4's new role as the woodworking/car shop. This will allow a much more efficient use of space for the locomotive- and car-building projects planned for the next few years.
Here, the small lathe emerges from Bay 4 and goes for a ride on a Koppel dump-car chassis. (Note that Bay 4 does
not have a crane, so this lift was accomplished the old-fashioned way with screw jacks and cribbing -- hence the two crossties under the lathe bed that served as our jacking points.)
And of course, there is the amazing covered bridge project. As comparison with the car (not mine) makes clear, it's an impressive structure.
