North Carolina Transportation museum, in Salisbury, NC(east of Charlotte). This would probably be the best along that route. There is also a museum in Savannah, GA, but not familier with it, and one in Duluth, GA(east of Atlanta).
The NC museum has operational equipment, but I don't think the other two have more than displays.
I'll try to find some links for you.
