John,
The reason for me choosing B/W is not to attempt to fool anyone into thinking this is a photo from a prior generation. There is too much deviation in today's landscape to ever come close - lack of code lines and poles, missing trackside shanties and structures, roadbed too manicured, proximity of tress and vegetation to the right-of-way, modern day clothing, locomotives power washed.
When stripping away color from an image other elements become much more prevalent: shapes, textures, tones, lighting, shadow and highlights, contrast, composition. These are the details I key in on.
