According to the info sheet that WSMC published about the "Modern Slide Valve K-27", they made 1000 of them. At the time it seemed to be about 500 too many. WSM tried to clear them out by selling them with a couple of passenger cars called "The Durango Express", and I think the modern slide valves were the fodder that the infamous K27 Garrett came from. There was time when you couldn't give them away.....
This was the third K-27 model Westside released. It was the first one that was close to correct. The first model was the Vauclain Compound version with the slope backed tender. They hadn't invented can motors yet and it came with an open frame motor. Because the motor was so big, the boiler was made about a foot too big in diameter, and the boiler was about a foot too high on the frame.
It was a mess. I was never interested in one until I found one with a micro-motor installed for $75.00 (really...)
The next version was an early slide valve with straight running boards. The boiler was the correct diameter, but it still rode too high on the frame.
