Jim Pearce once told me that when he fired on the Monarch Branch, one of the engineers would put a can of "Beanie Weenies" up on top of the backhead as they went up the switchbacks. By the time they got to Monarch he would have a hot lunch. One day the backhead apparently got a little too hot and as Jim was down on the deck firing he suddenly heard this "pop" noise and looked up to see the engineer covered in Beanie Weenies. Poor guy had that nickname until he retired...
I used to bring a can of soup with me in my grip and put it up on the backhead when we were about 5 miles from Osier. By the time we were done with switching it would be nice and hot. I always remembered to vent the can before heating...
