I've heard stories of engineers heating a pan with beans in the firebox or bbq'ing meat on a hot firebox door.
You can replicate this today by placing your meat on the power inverter or main transformer of modern electric locos, the only difference beeing the taste of hot electronics and oil instead of coal& smoke:-)
