In Josie Crum's book, _The Rio Grande Southern Railroad_ she tells of the lunch that was packed for the trainmen by the boarding house where they lived in Ridgway near the turn of the 20th Century. A sandwich, an apple and a tinfoil tray-like container of coffee (no thermoses back then!)which the crewman heated on the steam pipes of the cab when they were ready to eat.
Cooking on the backhead (and in the firebox) is an age old practice.
