I'm not criticizing the D&S, just saying they march to a different drummer. It is not a matter of purity, it is a matter of doing what makes the most sense given your goals. The economics of all tourist railroads are somewhat similar (steam is expensive, diesels are cheaper, and most riders really don't care), but what differs are the goals. My point is mainly that the economics don't really support steam, railroads like the C&TS and Strasburg are most likely on some kind of endangered species list, enjoy and support them in their current form while you can.
