Before I got injured, I rode around all of greater North America riding whatever narrow gauge (I brag about being a narrow gauge snob) I incidentally came across. I used Steamlocomotive.com for a guide. You might notice that several of the "mug shots" there are mine. While it's a little different now that I live in Chama, motive power would never have kept me off a train ride.
Oddly, here in Chama, through the Friends, I can ride several time a year for free (6 or more), and haven't yet. I -have- driven to Durango 3 times in 3 years, to ride that train for full price. I don't think diesel power would matter to me on a Cascade turn.
I've done White Pass a number of times, far more often with a diesel than a steam locomotive, and enjoyed them all thoroughly.
