John,
I think a good look at the SP Owens Valley, Carson & Colorado and Nevada & California is Robert Bader's Southern Pacific Narrow Gauge published by the SP Historical and Technical Society in 2010. The book may still be in print or available used. The rosters are just wonderful!

In addition to the cars in the display train at Laws; there are other bodies around Laws; that could use a friendly museum group to care for them around Laws. The Carson & Colorado group might take on a car or two, now that their #18 is finished. Or as finished as a steam loco can be.

anybody know the issue of Narrow Gauge & Short Line Gazette, mentioned above which has the article by Mallory Farrol?
