Great suggestion on the safety glasses. They are especially important for anyone (like me) who wears contact lenses. You can get those at Home Depot or Lowes when you pick up your earplugs.
There is ONE synthetic fabric that would probably work well in an engine cab environment. Dupont Nomex (TM) provides great fire-protection and is used in the clothing worn by race car drivers and pilots. It will not melt all over you like other synthetics and will char, but it won't burn. I have worn it in the cockpit for 30+ years. Unfortunately, it's not nearly as cheap as a good pair of denim bib overalls.
