I forgot to ask about gloves!

Does anyone have any advice regarding good gloves to wear for shoveling coal? Should I look for any specific features or avoid others? How about gloves that extend beyond the wrist? Would they be a good idea to protect against heat, or would the additional material just be in the way? Aside from avoiding any material that's too thin or synthetic, is there a type of material I should be looking for?
