I did the second engineer/fireman school, back in October of 2009.
Upon arriving in Chama, it was a beautiful fall day, and I went up on the pass and photographed Cumbres, Los Pinos, Cresco. The second night, there was a thunderstorm that knocked out electricity for awhile, and there was a damp feel in the air the next morning. Just above Cresco (my first run as fireman) Ronnie hollered, "Hey, look at the snow!" By the time we got to Cumbres, there was several inches on the ground. I've got some pics somewhere... the next time through, it was gone.
Bring layers. You'll need them all in the morning, and probably have all of them off by early afternoon. Drifting down through Big Horn, you'll be looking for one or two again.
I brought the disposable ear plugs. I never wore them. Maybe should have, but you are not in there twelve hours at a crack, day after day.
Enjoy the trip. I did!
