Around here we do see a few logging truck loads with big pine logs. I remember fondly when Boise Cascade still had a mill here that could handle really big logs. It was a real treat to watch a 3' dia. log be broken down into cants as it passed the double sided band saw on the shot gun carriage. The cants then went through resaws to be made into normal dimension lumber sizes. Big pine was the norm. Now big pine is nearly always coming off of private timber lands. I suspect some private timber owners cut a measured amount of big pine each year on their timber/grazing land to put some money away. Actually I know this happens. I have also been told that really big pine logs are penalized in price as they have to go to a few select mills that can still handle them, as most have adapted to handling smaller timber that is second or third growth.
