Trains west of Chama were doubleheaded. With the up and down profile it was neccessary to have both engines on the point or those old wood idler flats would have come apart even more often than they did (which was rather often).
Occasionally a one-engine train would have a helper out of DGO to the top of Florida Mesa at Falfa. The train with one engine would then continue east and set out over-tonnage at Lumberton before climbing up Monero Canon. When enough cars accumulated in Lumberton, a Durango crew would make a Lumberton Turn from Chama to bring in the cars.
Westbounds were doubleheaded all the way to Durango until 1958 when the 483 got wrecked doubleheading down the 2% into Durango. After that the helper would run light ahead from Chama to Gato, help the train over Florida Mesa. then run light to Durango. Some trains would depart Chama with one engine and a helper would be sent light from Durango to Gato to help the train west.
