If I recall correctly, the 1500's were originally intended to be dual-service(1923) but once they were in service they were found to be too hard on the track at more than about 30 mph. There are pictures of them with passenger trains from early on in thier career. [see "Rio Grande: to the Pacific" pgs 137 & 138]
